Biodiversity Institute
The Biodiversity Institute of Ontario (BIO) is an interdisciplinary research institute dedicated to improving the understanding of biodiversity at all scales, from the genetic to the macroecological. BioCar Initiative
A multi-university project led by the University of Guelph involving 16 scientists at Guelph and the universities of Toronto, Waterloo and Windsor. They are combining their research strengths and efforts to improve the development and delivery capacity of biomaterials for the automotive industry.

GFTC is Canada's only not-for-profit, non-subsidized food technology centre. Rothsay Biodiesel
Headquartered in Guelph and is an extension of Rothsay rendering company wholly owned and operated by Maple Leaf Foods Inc.  Always looking for new and innovative ways to recycle waste materials, Rothsay decided to take a look at the production of biodiesel.  Our biodiesel plant is built at the site of one of our rendering facilities near the port of Montreal and began commercial production in 2002.  One of the more notable initiatives was our involvement in the Montreal BioBus joint study which looked at biodiesel usage on the Montreal bus fleet over the course of a full year.  Our current capacity is approx. 32 million liters per year of premium biodiesel produced from a variety of feedstock but primarily restaurant grease and animal tallow in support of our rendering operations.

Evolution BioFuels
This is a 200 tonne/day BioOil facility that utilizes wood chips and converts to oil by pyrolysis process. The company is also in the process of identifying a number of derivative products and chemicals derived from BioOil that will be the focus of development at their research facility.  There have been promising indications for the production of syngas from BioOil, carbon activation from char and BioOil blends. Evolution BioFuels is co-operating with universities and other research laboratories in North America and Europe in the development of derivative products from BioOil and BioOil-char mixes.”

Ontario BioAuto Council
The Ontario BioAuto Council is working to link agriculture and forestry with the chemical and plastics industry to produce materials and chemicals from biological feedstocks. The bio-based materials – such as flexible foams and rigid plastics would be supplied to the auto-parts manufacturers and auto assemblers for incorporation into Ontario-made cars and trucks. The Council is also working to identify other markets for bio-based materials such as the packaging and construction sectors.

Ontario Ethanol Growth Fund
The McGuinty government is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by increasing the use of ethanol in gasoline. In November 2004, Ontario announced its commitment to a Renewable Fuels Standard, requiring an average of five per cent ethanol in all gasoline sold in Ontario by January 1, 2007.
On June 17, 2005, the Ontario Government announced the Ontario Ethanol Growth Fund to support the production of ethanol fuel in Ontario.
